Subject: Re: How is Gothic 'weihs' pronounced?

The Old English word "wukce," from the Dictionary of Old English Corpus, is--or was--a variant form of "wicce." Can one automatically assume because of this that its pronunciation is in any way similar? Another variant is "wicci." How, by looking at such words, can one determine that they actually are variants of "wicce?" Can this be done without reading them in context? If you came across a rock with the word "wukce" on it, and nothing else, would it be possible to figure it out?

There is actually no exception in such a case: the regular sound change is one event, and the borrowing is another event. The sound change itself is regular.
