Subject: Re: Entry format
From my experience in Cleasby and Vigfusson there is a fair amount of consistency in the entries, though there is variation in what gets bold faced and what gets italicized. However, they lay out their abbreviations at the start and appear to stick to them. Choice of abbreviation seems to depend on the space available in other dictionaries, though, and greater variation is seen.
One question that has come to mind as I've been correcting pages is how much we should think about "correcting" the original scans. On the one hand digitizing the original text as closely as possible is really important, and feeds into the goal of encoding these with TEI. On the other hand, I can easily imagine developing an "updated" edition of Cleasby and Vigfusson with modern typography, corrections, and additions (if there are any.) Unfortunately the market for such a thing may not support the effort involved, but you never know!
Anyway, just my $0.02 worth.
