Subject: Apology for service outage
Everybody,
The Search system, the Message Board, and the Volunteer systems were all unavailable from the morning of the 4th until the afternoon of the 7th, a few hours ago. I'm sorry for this outage.
What happened was that the firewall was changed to deny all incoming traffic to my building from outside the college campus. This meant that nobody outside the campus could reach the server. I saw nothing going wrong, since I was connecting to the server from within the campus. It wasn't until someone sent me an email this morning that I knew about the problem.
I'm planning to build an alarm system to let me know if anything like this happens again. A lot of volunteers have put a lot of work into creating the data here, and I'm determined to keep the data reliably available.
