Subject: For Peter
Hello Peter,
I am looking for a Proto-Germanic, Gothic, Old English, Middle English, Old Norse, etc. word pronounced "wicker," "vicker, or "wyker," and meaning "knowing, enlightened, aware, awakened, etc." The pronunciation could be regional, but it must have a hard "k" sound.
Are you aware of any such word?
A number of people in North England have told me of words ending in "a" and "e" pronounced "er," but nobody has come up with one that fits this definition. I have wike, but it's a singular noun, and Middle English wice as "wise" (but nobody can tell me how it should be pronounced), and vikr (another singular noun, which doesn't seem to come close).
A plural noun meaning "guides, leaders, etc." with this "er" pronunciation might work.
Thank you for any suggestions.
Curt
