Subject: Italics (was: Probabilistic correction)
I think it's the case that a word in italics is never an Old English word (leaving aside errors in the italic markings).
Sometimes the best solution is a Rube Goldberg contraption. You could use a probabilistic approach to try to identify the language of a word, but then deterministically reject that result for an individual word when an italic word has been judged to be an OE word. For such a word, you'd pick the second-place winner (Latin or ModE) instead.
