Subject: Word Pedigree

I was thinking up a neat idea for a program the other day. Having an interest in genealogy, I've used many family tree programs. This got me to thinking, words have their own sort of family tree and wouldnít it be great if you could compile their pedigree in a similar manner.

For example, the PIE. root *aiw- "birthed" the Germ. *aiwi which than was "married" to the Germ. *wihti, who than begot the OE. áwiht begetting the ME. aught...

With such a program, you could have it build descendant tree charts of any word at any point in its development, even diagramming its "relatives". If anyone knows of a program that does anything of the like, PLEASE let me know. For any of you programmers out there looking for a project, well there you go. I was thinking of trying to build a MS Access version myself but quickly remember how inproficient I was with the program.
