Subject: Roman numerals changed to bold
Everyone who expressed an opinion seemed to be in favor of making the
online text match the original text by adding bold tags to the Roman
numerals which number definitions within an entry. So, I wrote
scripts to globally make these numerals bold in both dictionaries
(Bosworth/Toller and Cleasby/Vigfusson).
As with all global changes, this affects only pages which have not yet
been hand corrected. If you feel inclined to revise your earlier
corrections and resubmit them, this would be a good thing.
The Bosworth/Toller PDF files are being regenerated right now. I will
start the Cleasby/Vigfusson ones running in the morning. If you have
reserved a page and have not yet started corrections, you can either
use the version you already downloaded, or you can download the new PDF
and .txt files to save yourself a little bit of work.
Bold tags were added to 4060 entries in B/T, out of around 66400
entries. Bold tags were added to 1272 entries in C/V.
The script turned out to be a good bit harder to write than I had
expected. The numerals I and II are very often errors for something
else. The script adds tags only to a reasonable sequence within the
entry (such as I. II. III. IV.). If it finds an irregular sequence
such as I. II. I. III., it will add tags to all but the second I.,
because it is out of sequence. The script also ignores apparent Roman
numerals in certain contexts, such L. M. I. or L. I. P. where the I.
is actually a part of an abbreviation.
I'm certain that the results are not perfect, but they will hopefully
save a fair bit of hand correction effort.
