Subject: Anyone know about these two symbols?
I've just been working on Bosworth/Toller. Here are two symbols which I've been unable to resolve:
Page d0175, entry "Eáster-wucu": At the beginning of the fourth line of the entry is a symbol which looks like a "k" with a bar thru it. However, it could also be an ordinary "k" with some accidentally smeared ink. Is barred-k a legitimate medievalist symbol? What does it mean? Does anybody know?
Page d0570, entry "hund": On or around line 21 is "anno cccc vii". After the "cccc", and again after the "vii", there is a superscript "o" which looks like a degree symbol. The person who corrected the page encoded this as º, which is a standard HTML entity which is designated as a "masculine ordinal indicator". However, the character in question (º º) has a horizontal line under the superscript "o", so I'm not sure whether this is a typographical variant of the same symbol, or a different symbol. Does anybody know?
