Subject: Major hardware failure; service restored
The server penguin.pearson.swarthmore.edu suffered a major hardware
failure on 18 November 2005. Service was restored on 22 November.
The problem was a fried motherboard, which we believe was caused by a
power surge following an unscheduled power outage (other pieces of
equipment on campus were damaged at the same time). No data on
Penguin were lost.
I received a number of emails expressing concern that the project had
vanished forever. This is very unlikely to happen. The project has
been continuously online since 1999 (minus a few power outages), and
it will continue to be maintained and improved for the foreseeable
future. Any service outage is almost certainly temporary.
