Subject: Proper pronunciation
Hi,
I've just begun to study Old English - self study until I can find the time to take an actual course - and I've run into a contradiction between the B&T resources and another. The issue is pronunciation; in the vowels I've checked here (I'm posting this before I go through it all) the sounds are very different from those illustrated at this page: h t t p://acunix.wheatonma.edu/mdrout/GrammarBook2007/ch3.html. For example, at the site I've been studying long 'a' is pronounced as in 'father', but the B&T Dictionary gives the sound as "'o' in 'no' and 'bone'". Further, short æ (ash, if it doesn't display) is listed here as "'ai' in 'main'", but at the other site as 'a' in "cat". So what's the deal? Is this just akin to modern regional accents?
Truth be told, I'm leaning towards the B&T pronunciation as most references refer to this as the highest authority; however, I'd like to be as accurate as possible.
Thanks for any help anyone can give!
-Dave
