Hi:

I think B-T's out of date. Though there is acrimonious disagreement over *long* æ, and I've been told my pronunciation of diphthongs is naive (I base it on the spellings, with the first part having the stress and the length if there is any--B-T's putting the accents on the second letter of a diphthong has been graphically superseded), I think the two examples you cite are based on late Middle and early Modern English, post-Great Vowel Shift.
