I first got interested when I was in elementary school. My grandmother gave me a children's encyclopedia which had some samples of Beowulf in the original Old English. I remember being blown away by the idea that this alien-looking text was English, and it had changed over time to become the commonplace, everyday language that I spoke with my family and peers.
In high school, it was clear to me that my career choice was to go either into computer science or linguistics. I thought about it hard, because I loved both; but in the end I decided that I loved linguistics more. My dad wanted me to go into computer science because he said I'd make more money that way. He was probably right about that, but making as much money as possible has never been my first priority. I don't regret my choice. I got to do the computers too, anyway.
I studied linguistics on my own in high school with books from the nearby university library. When I started college, I never changed my major, and never really thought about doing anything else; I knew I was doing what was right for me. I did linguistics the whole way, up thru my Ph.D.
