§§ 207-8] Declension of Nouns 97
be divided into -an, -jan, and -wan stems, but in Gothic as in the other Germanic languages all three classes were declined alike.
§ 207. a. Masculines.
SING. PLUR. f
Nom. hana, cock hanans
Ace. hanan hanans
Gen. hanins hananē
Dat. hanin hanam

The prim. Germanic forms of hana were: Sing. nom.
*xanēn or -on (cp. Gr. ποιμ.ήΐ', shepherd; ήγεμών, leader], ace. *xananun (cp. Gr. ηγεμόνα), gen. *\anenaz or *xaniniz (cp. Gr. ποιμέΐΌ?), dat. (originally loc.) *xanini (cp. Gr. ποιμ,ε'η); PI. nom. *xananiz (cp. Gr. ήγεμόΊ-εϊ), ace. *xana-nunz older 'xannunz (cp. Gr. ηγεμόνα?, KuVas = Indg.
*kun-ns (§§ 53-4), dogs), gen. *xannðn (cp. Goth, aáhsn-ē, OE. oxn-a, of oxen, Gr. KUC-OJ.», of dogs), dat. *xanunmiz. The Gothic cases of the sing, and the nom. pi. are regularly developed from the corresponding prim. Germanic forms. The ace. pi. hanans is the nom. used for the accusative. *χαηηοη would have become *hannō; hananē had the second -an- from the nom. pi., and the -ē is of the same unknown origin as in dagē (§ 179). The dat. pi. was formed direct from han- + am, the ending of the a-stems.
